Wish
At this house in Groesbeek the conservatory had been built against the existing dwelling. The conservatory and living room were separated by a sliding glass wall. On the first floor, space in the bedrooms and bathroom was limited by the sloping roof.
The wish was to turn the ground floor into one continuous space and to explore how the first floor could be used more efficiently.
Design
The owners had a clear idea of what they wanted. I supported them by first researching what is possible within the zoning plan and then developing several options that matched their idea. With the necessary drawings and 3D visuals the permit was applied for and granted.
The result is an extension on the site of the conservatory that substantially enlarges the living room. A roof light in the extension brings enough daylight into the centre of the house. Because the back door is used most, the roof of the extension continues along the side of the house so they can open the door and garage under cover. Inside, a half-height wall was added so you do not step straight into the living room.
On the first floor a dormer was added. This gives the bathroom and one of the bedrooms considerably more usable floor area.
